Hardware upgrade for Laptop Gateway M-6806m

Imagen
I'm doing a hardware upgrade to this  old   laptop by upgrading the RAM from 2G to 4G, removing the DVD and adding a caddy to store the original hard drive were the DVD was and a new SDD to install the OS instead of the original HDD. The caddy I gouth is a PATA IDE to SATA, 12.7mm to connect the original HDD, which you can see over the DVD and the SSD already connected and protected by that metal "cage" to the left. Now, you can see the original RAM installed and the new 4G protected with the envelops they were sent by the provider: And now, these are the brand new 4G RAM installed:  Now, this is how it looks the caddy taking the place and simulating being the DVD (at the bottom): The old BIOS detects the new RAM installed: But I had a problem with the BIOS to put the SSD as the primary boot device and the HDD as secondary,  somehow the HDD went to the "bottom" of the options and it was complicate to put it below the SSD. When I finally got the drives in the boo...

Debian is shutting down its public FTP services

So, everything is changing and nothing remains the same: " After many years of serving the needs of our users, and some more of declining usage in favor of better options, all public-facing debian.org FTP services will be shut down on November 1, 2017. These are: ftp://ftp.debian.org ftp://security.debian.org This decision is driven by the following considerations: FTP servers have no support for caching or acceleration. Most software implementations have stagnated and are awkward to use and configure. Usage of the FTP servers is pretty low as our own installer has not offered FTP as a way to access mirrors for over ten years. The protocol is inefficient and requires adding awkward kludges to firewalls and load-balancing daemons. " More info/details here: https://www.debian.org/News/2017/20170425

DWA-131, driver configuration and installation rtl8192eu

Well, while trying to do some troubleshooting to get this device working I found a blog where we get an explanation about how to get it working. This worked with Debian, didn't test it with other Linux distribution. The site is  https://trollingheavy.wordpress.com/2016/09/25/d-link-dwa-131-rev-e-on-linux/ Just in case that blog dissapears, I'm doing copy & paste of the instructions provided ('cause I know I'm going to need them in the future again): " Early models in round cases used chipsets which now have inbuilt support (rev A- realtek 8192su, rev B – realtek 8192cu), but the newer ones (revision E) use a realtek 8192eu. There is a driver available from D-Link, but for me it was a kernel-panicky mess. This is a list of instructions that I used to install a driver hosted by github user  jpostma  which seems to be the official realtek driver with patches (for what? not sure, but it works) applied. User  Brainiarc7  suggests using  https...

D-Link USB Wireless N 300 Mbps DWA-131

Imagen
Today I bought this nano USB wireless adapter,  I was planning to use it to replace the wireless card (that still works) of this very old Gateway laptop. So far I failed and probably will not succeed 'cause this doesn't seem to work with Debian despite I found that this "revision" seems to work with Ubuntu, which is frustrating 'cause that's not the distro I want to use. Frustation Level:  Like the old times when you had a "winmodem" and couldn't make it work.

I'm shutting down my Tor node.

Imagen
I'm shutting down my Tor node. I'm doing this because my ISP (Axtel) for some unknown reason (for them) can't fix an issue with the Zhone gateway device. This is affecting the way the Tor node works and if I can't offer a stable connection the best I can do is to shutdown the node. This does not make me happy but at least I could share some bandwith and I want to believe that people who really needed was able to use it. For the history, this is the graph: What's next?  Test the MinnowBoard MAX with Android / OpenBSD / FreeBSD / NetBSD / etc.  If you wonder what the issue is with the Zhone device, it keeps the dhcp address for all the connected devices but there's no connection to the Internet. Why? Axtel support does not have idea. Until now, all the answers that I get from them are lies. Once, they told me that they applied a patch, that a firmware-update was needed another timethey  just did a reboot and asked me to check the connection. I was takin...

Setup a Tor node using a MinnowBoard Max and Debian (Jeessie)

Imagen
So, after reading Gunnar's blog post about how he configured a Tor node using his " Cubox-i4Pro " I decided to try and setup one using the MinnowBoard MAX and the installation of Debian done previously accepting the " Tor Challenge ". Once you have your GNU/Linux distribution installed/configured the way you want (and needed to setup the TOR node), this is what I have in the configuration file: Tor Configuration File (torrc): SocksPort 0 ORPort 9001 Nickname ididnteditheconfig RelayBandwidthRate 640 KB RelayBandwidthBurst 640 KB ContactInfo Random Person ExitPolicy reject *:* BridgeRelay 1 DisableDebuggerAttachment 0 Like Gunnar, I ended with an "exit relay" instead of a "bridge relay", so I had to modify the configuration file accordingly. Please, do not do a "copy & paste" (at least not entirely) of what I wrote here. You need to configure the "Relay*" parameters based on the available ban...

Installing Debian to a MinnowBoard MAX.

Imagen
Finally I got Debian (Jessie) installed at the MinnowBoard MAX.  I had to do a couple of tries 'cause with the emotion I forgot to check the minimum space needed to perform a very basic installation.  I tried first using a 2 GB USB key, then a 4GB USB key which worked perfectly fine with the exception of the /var partition, which almost got full while downloading packages. So let's see (almost) every step. 1.- Booting I got "UEFI shell" and saw the USB key available and ready to boot, some explanations here about this. Really, it's not that hard to boot and start the installation, you just need to read a little if you really don't know what are you doing. 2.- Install Let's start the installation of Debian! "Some of your hardware needs non-free firmware files to operate". As of now, I didn't take a look at this, I just continue with the installation and everything went fine. As ...

MinnowBoard MAX

Imagen
So, this time I'm lucky to have a MinnowBoard MAX :) I'll do some tests installing Debian, Android and who knows? For now I just tested that boots, sends output using the HDMI port and was looking for places that might sell the cable to use the serial port.

Seguí la recomendación de instalar "ogle", pero tampoco tuve éxito: #ogle -u cli /dev/hdc WARNING[ogle_mpeg_vs]: B-frame before forward ref frame WARNING[ogle_mpeg_vs]: B-frame before forward ref frame No accelerated IMDCT transform found SNDCTL_DSP_GETCHANNELMASK: Invalid argument Xscreensaver not running. ...

TV Sabrent SBT-TVFM con GNU/Linux Debian (LifeView/Typhoon FlyVIDEO2000)

Imagen
