A couple of years ago, wife needed a new laptop and bought a new notebook, the "STAR WARS™ Special Edition Notebook" specifically... because "star wars". </div>

She decided first to use the Windows OS and later to have dual OS having Windows and GNU/Linux. Some time later she went full with GNU/Linux distribution. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">November 11th - The notebook started to fail at boot, you can imagine that after this time the hard drive could have issues and that's what we confirmed. She'll buy a new hard drive... some time in the future.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">When we had the new hard drive installed and ready, we tried with OpenSuSe but after the installation was done and first boot completed, it felt "slow" and we considered it was too much for this laptop and we decided to try with Mint.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Again after the installation was done and session started after some minutes the system hang, this time I went to one of the terminals just to find a lot of lines reporting <br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected....."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZCu0QyTBQVDm3K6ecd0tKsHxsDGX79MSarAb-lk0DN6d6ZjvIw0dCJovCZdyiYCsJ15jHSCTFfxvg6nKUzHsRToewabnO5Z4ZjQX0RNoYzEuA2AK5k-dBm8GMNOkXugH7-iRq8z0sih_/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2176" data-original-width="4608" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZCu0QyTBQVDm3K6ecd0tKsHxsDGX79MSarAb-lk0DN6d6ZjvIw0dCJovCZdyiYCsJ15jHSCTFfxvg6nKUzHsRToewabnO5Z4ZjQX0RNoYzEuA2AK5k-dBm8GMNOkXugH7-iRq8z0sih_/w640-h302/IMG_20191020_205705.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Restarting was not working because as the system came up, it hang. In the last months I've been using pi-hole to block ads/trackers/etc, here's a guide based on the official document and examples found on different sites/blogs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm using a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B along with raspbian </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Download/install/configure pi-hole</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
# curl -sSL https://install.pi-hole.net | bash</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The installation script runs and you'll be shown the following: "This installer will transform your device into a network-wide ad blocker! "</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next step requires you to provide the DNS upstream servers, consider using the Cloudfare DNS servers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 or the DNS server you want.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The installation is done and you should get the message:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Installation Complete! <br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next steps depends on your home network configuration, on your router find the section where you set the DNS server and use the ip address that you configured for pi-hole.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, open your favorite web browser and point it to the ip address assigned to the host where you are doing this configuration adding /admin at the end.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You'll be at the main dashboard of pi-hole and you can see the stats/settings/logs, add more lists.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I didn't give more details about the installation of pi-hole 'cause those are well covered by the documentation provided by the team developing pi-hole, what I didn't found was a section explaining how to add a little more security using a firewall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Configure a firewall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This section is about how to make iptable configurations to load on every reboot.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you want to know about building proper rules, please do your own research.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I use iptables but you might want to use ufw or any other option available to configure your own firewall, some steps to take before going further:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
# apt-get dist-upgrade<br />
<br />
# apt-get update</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then I installed iptables-persistent package with apt-get command:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
# apt-get install iptables-persistent</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the menu, selected Yes for the rules.v4 file. The second choice was rule.v6 and IPv6 support, configure them based on your network configuration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then, edit the file rules.v4</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
# vi /etc/iptables/rules.v4<br />
<br />
Now you can see the existing iptables configuration, no rules are setup yet, it is completely empty:<br />
<br />
<br />
# Generated by iptables-save v1.6.0 on Mon Apr 29 03:27:41 2019<br />
*filter<br />
:INPUT ACCEPT [5897:7430402]<br />
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]<br />
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [1767:169364]<br />
COMMIT<br />
# Completed on Mon Apr 29 03:27:41 2019</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can start building your iptables using this file, adding the rules you need one per line before the COMMIT command. When you're done, save the file.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, I found a suggestion to add at least the following rule, in order to validate:<br />
<br />
-A INPUT -p icmp -m icmp –icmp-type 8 -j REJECT</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now ping your device, it should respond normally and perform a reboot:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
# reboot</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When your device is back on do a ping request again and this time you should get the “Destination port unreachable” message. Now feel free to add the rest of the rules you need.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If your line COMMIT fails maybe there are some mistakes before this line. Check each single line in your configuration file.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After I configured iptables and added more lists to pi-hole the amount of ads I saw decreased considerably but you might have to check if those lists are maintained/available or search for new.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Sometimes you might be unable to access them with no error message or something that gives you a clue why, just remember that you have a pi-hole and search the logs, disable it for a few minutes and confirm you can access the web site, after that you'll have to search which list is blocking it, contact the person who provide the list and ask to remove it or add it to the "white list" section.</div>

I would like to see other options in the future, like configurations for specific devices, more details from the stats. So far so good, it does what is says, block the ads and it works also for an openvpn mobile client!!!</div>

I've been trying to install the Brave browser on CentOS 7 for some time now.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The problem was that you had to use an option that is not considered safe to make it work and I opted not to use it that way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I went back to check the progress made and if a new option was available to get it installed/running with CentOS 7 (release 7.7.1908).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The good news is yes <i>but</i>, you have to <i>use a specific version</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you are using CentOS 8 the instructions <a href="https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018666072-How-do-I-install-Brave-on-Linux-using-the-terminal-" target="_blank">here</a> might work for you, if you are working with CentOS 7 don't follow them because as stated by "<a href="https://github.com/fmarier" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">fmarier</a>" on this <a href="https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/4280" target="_blank">link</a>: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><i>< Given that CentOS 8 is now out and that we do not currently have the
resources to do the work necessary to fix the glibc and the keysigning
issues specific to CentOS/RHEL 7, we have decided not to support that
version at this time and to instead allocate our time to the Linux
distros which are currently working. ></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, how do we install Brave?! Here's another <a href="https://community.brave.com/t/installing-on-centos-7/66266" target="_blank">link</a> with a post from "<a href="https://github.com/jseidl" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">jseidl</a>":</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<b>"</b>We’ve identified that the latest release that installs cleanly on CentOS/RHEL 7 is <code>v0.62.51</code>.<br />
<div class="cooked">
You can download the RPM here: <a href="https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v0.62.51" rel="nofollow noopener">https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v0.62.51 <span class="badge badge-notification clicks" title="60 clicks">60</span></a><br />

<code>echo 10000 > /proc/sys/user/max_user_namespaces <b>"</b></code></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I downloaded the rpm package and install it using rpm:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"># rpm -ivh brave-browser-0.62.51-1.x86_64.rpm <br />error: Failed dependencies:<br /> /usr/bin/lsb_release is needed by brave-browser-0.62.51-1.x86_64<br /> liberation-fonts is needed by brave-browser-0.62.51-1.x86_64</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Yesterday I saw something similar like when you take a snapshot while using the OnePlus 6, my impression was that I somehow took one but I was wrong.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Somehow I saw it flickering when I pressed the power button, eventually the battery was empty and after I recharged the flickering happened again. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today in the morning happened again and I had enough, after some research found <a href="https://thedroidguy.com/2019/10/what-to-do-if-your-oneplus-6-has-a-screen-flickering-issue-easy-steps-1087103" target="_blank">this page</a> with instructions to fix it, my biggest concern was that it could be related to hardware, yesterday the cell phone slipped from my hand and although the hit against the ground was not strong I was suspicious that could be related.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first solution (reboot) didn't worked.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second solution (delete system cache) I tough it worked until I saw the flickering happening again trying to unblock the cell and doing a reboot. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I didn't tried the third solution (a reset which implies losing all the data) or the fourth option (send it to "OnePlus service" which is not an option for me) and started searching again for another alternative and I had the good look to find someone who had the same problem and made a video.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="566" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dmgsB_crbG4" width="935"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The solution (I'm not sure if it's the right one but works for me) came from one of the comments:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"<span style="background-color: #1f1f1f; color: rgba(255 , 255 , 255 , 0.88); font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Open setting/utilities/one plus laboratory/ DC dimming /ON</span>"</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the issue is gone!</div>

After you complete your favorite option (Workstation, Server, etc) of CentOS 8 as a virtual machine using VirtualBox you're going to need to install the following packages (note that I'm using 'dnf' instead of yum which is a softlink):</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"># which yum</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">/usr/bin/yum</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"># which dnf</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">/usr/bin/dnf</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;"># ls -ld /usr/bin/yum</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 5 May 13 14:34 /usr/bin/yum - dnf-3</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<pre># dnf install kernel-devel-$(uname -r) kernel-headers perl gcc make elfutils-libelf-devel</pre>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After this, you can proceed as usual to the VirtualBox menu "Devices" and choose the option at the bottom "Insert Guest Additions CD image..."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And follow the usual steps when a window pop-up asking you to run the script and proceed with the compilation/installation of the module.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What follows is the output of the installation of the packages from previous command (if you choose the "workstation" option:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
1.- It looks like this is very important and you must not skip it!!!!<br />
Download/install last oficial firmware by Linksys<br />
Ver. 2.1.42 (Build 183584)<br />
Latest Date: 9/19/2017<br />
Download 22.6 MB<br />
<br />
From here: <a href="http://downloads.linksys.com/downloads/firmware/FW_EA4500_2.1.42.183584_prod.img" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://downloads.linksys.com/downloads/firmware/FW_EA4500_2.1.42.183584_prod.img</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
Perform the "upgrade"<br />
<br />
<br />
2.- After the reboot, perform the install of OpenWRT. I'm not sure but my attempts to install the very latest firmware failed, so I used the version mention on this chatroom:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://forum.archive.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=60649&p=1#p304557" target="_blank">https://forum.archive.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=60649&p=1#p304557</a><br />
<br />
Post #21:<br />
Edit: that image you're running now might be old enough that you should flash the factory firmware first, then flash with <a href="https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/kirkwood/generic/openwrt-kirkwood-linksys-viper-squashfs-factory.bin" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots … actory.bin</a> .<br />
<br />
The board name changed from ea4500 to linksys-viper, which will prevent sysupgrade from accepting the .tar image.<br />
<br />
Link to the file: <a href="https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/kirkwood/generic/openwrt-kirkwood-linksys-viper-squashfs-factory.bin" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/kirkwood/generic/openwrt-kirkwood-linksys-viper-squashfs-factory.bin</a><br />
<br />
Wait for the reboot, ping the router and when you get answer open an ssh session:<br />
<br />
<br />
3.- ssh root@192.168.1.1<br />
Warning: Permanently added '192.168.1.1' (RSA) to the list of known hosts.<br />
<br />
